Battery

For Surfing:

There are two switching modes – long boosts for paddling out and short boosts for catching waves. All parameters of these modes can be configured through the app depending on your needs. One fully charged battery is enough for roughly 2 hours on and off boosting.

For SUP:

There are 3 continuous modes with different power levels:
SUP Assistance – 100 min
SUP Trolling – 70 min
SUP Wind – 40 min

In the current version of the fin, the battery is not removable, but shouldn’t cause any issues with the airplane regulations. You can have in the carry-on with you as it fits the limits of 100wh – Boost Fin Specs

Lithium batteries with more than 100 watt-hours may be allowed in carry-on bags with airline approval. One spare battery, not exceeding 300 watt-hours, or two spare batteries, not exceeding 160 watt-hours each, are permitted in carry-on bags.

There’s no need to worry about over-discharging your battery from riding. We have designed the system to always stay within a safe operating range while in use. Battery Management System (BMS) properly protects the battery from overheat, over-discharge, overcharge, overcurrent, shortage, and disconnect during operation and charging process. However, don’t store your battery for long periods of time while it is on a low charge. Lithium batteries naturally self-discharge and may suffer damage if left for long periods without a charge.

Some types of batteries have a “memory” effect and need to be fully cycled on occasion to obtain maximum capacity. Boost Fin lithium batteries do not suffer from this issue. You can charge your battery for as long or as little as you like without damage.

We haven’t tested it in the subzero temperatures, but our engineering team said that it won’t impact the performance. However, the battery might not last as long.

Getting Started

The Boost Fin can fit any surfboard or paddleboard, thanks to a variety of adapters that we created. While there are thousands of different board brands, the fin systems are industry-standard in most cases and we have adapters for all of them. The Longboard Adapter is included in the package by default. If you have a different fin slot, we have plenty of additional adapters to fit your surfboard or SUP:

Some brands make their own fin box that is only compatible with those brands fins. These fins have very few if any fin options. In case you have a brand-specific fin box, non-removable fins, twin fin setup, or no fin slot at all – we provide a universal stick-on mount. It’s also a perfect solution for kayaks or other water toys. The fin box adapter is designed to attach to any surface with a water-resistant adhesive. Once you have the fin box attached, the adapter simply plugs into the fin box. The fin box becomes a permanent part of your board, but the Boost Fin and slide-in adapter can be taken off whenever you want.

If you are not sure which adapter to choose, just send a picture of your fin to info@boostsurfing.ch and we will help you out.

All in, the Boost Fin package includes:

  • 1x Boost Fin
  • 1x Longboard adapter (US fin box)
  • 1x Waterproof Remote Control
  • 1x 100-240V Wall Charger
  • 2x Plug Adapters (US and EU)
  • 1x Mounting Kit

You can purchase more adapters for $29.99 each and include them in your fin shipment to save on shipping costs. If you’re not sure which adapter to choose, check out the Fin Boxes and Adapters Guide or reach us out via info@boostsurfing.ch.

First, make sure to check out this article if you haven’t yet – Is it compatible with my board (kayak, canoe, etc.)?

The device is designed to be installed on a surfboard or SUP instead of a regular fin using special adapters and allows a person to more effectively use their skills when moving on water or waves. It’s installed like a regular fin:

  1. Just insert the adapter, then
  2. Put the fin on top of it and screw it in
  3. All set! It stays perfectly.

It’s a quick 5-min installation, no drilling is needed.

Boost Fin isn’t meant for constantly pushing a human body so it isn’t technically a motorized vehicle. Products like these are relatively new on the market and there is no definite law for or against it. Whoever purchases and uses Boost Fin on a Swiss lake or river is responsible for adhering to the law. Boost Surf Switzerland declines all responsibility.

How to control the Boost Fin

The device is switched on and off by bringing the screwdriver handle with a magnet into the light indication area. The Hall sensor HS1 is responsible for turning on, and HS2 for turning off. A timer shutdown is also possible, the default value is 30 min, which can be configured via the app. The device also turns off automatically when the battery is completely discharged.

After successfully turning on the device, the motor is controlled by a radio remote control with two buttons. The remote can go on your wrist, shoulder, or paddle if you’re on a SUP. Button A turns on the Short Boost mode, button B turns on the Long Boost mode. All parameters of these modes can be configured through the mobile app, which can be downloaded here. Pressing any of the buttons again turns off the motor.

There are two switching modes: for button A – Short Boost, for button B – Long Boost. All parameters of these modes are configured through the application. Pressing any button again while the motor is on will turn it off.

Parameters adjustable for Short Boost, button A:

Short Boost has 3 work scenarios that are selected and configured from the application:

Smart 1 – the motor is switched on for the set duration and power.
Smart 2 – the motor performs a sequence of starts, first with the parameters of the Smart 1 mode, and then switches to the Smart 2 operating mode with the duration and power set for it.
Smart 3 – the motor performs a sequence of starts, first with the parameters of the Smart 1 mode, and then switches to the operating mode with the Smart 2 parameters, then switches to the Smart 3 operating mode with the duration and power set for it.

For each of the modes, it is possible to set two parameters: the duration of switching on in the range of 1 – 7 seconds and the motor power in the range of 80 – 115%.

To smoothly turn on and off the motor, you can set the number of steps for a gradually increasing motor power until the set value is reached, up steps (1 – 7) and down steps (1– 7) for a smooth motor stop. Time for one step 0,25 sec. These parameters work as follows: If Smart 3 is selected, then up steps are included before Smart 1 and down steps after Smart 3.

Only one of these scenarios can be assigned to button A, but it can always be changed through the application.

The main feature of the app is that you will be able to adjust your Boost fin’s settings to comply with your needs and your style. Each fin comes with pre-set modes that you can customize for different types of styles and waves. You can play around with the setting to find just the right mode for yourself. Remember, more power equals more battery usage and vice versa.

How to connect a Boost Fin to your phone

Safety

The propeller is protected by a removable safety guard that won’t let your fingers get through. In case something like seaweed gets caught in it won’t do any damage. Most times, you’ll be able to get everything out with your hand without removing the prop nut. But if something hard gets caught in there and blocks the propeller from spinning – the motor will detect it and stop automatically to prevent any inner damage.

P.S. In case something truly damages the propeller, you’ll be able to resolve this issue through our service center.

Because you’ll wear the button on the wrist (which most of you would do), you can shut it off manually anytime. So don’t worry, you won’t have to chase your board.

Boost Fin is made with durable, wear-resistant materials to help you catch waves for years on. That is why our Tech & Design was running rigorous testing to make sure the Boost fin stays in place and performs well in different conditions. And that is why if something damages your Boost fin, we have service centers around the world to help you fix issues instead of throwing it away and buying a new one.

Lithium-Ion batteries from electric vehicles are already recycled at 60% and innovations have moved that up to a possible 80%. ABS is a thermoplastic material so it also can be easily recycled. Instead of burning, thermoplastics like ABS liquefy which allows them to be easily injection molded and then subsequently recycled.

Plus, hoping you aren’t going to throw it into the ocean! 😉

The Boost Fin doesn’t make any loud noise. We tested it out with surfers paddling 3ft away from the Boost Fin and they couldn’t hear a thing. All they did was wondering how the heck was that surfer paddling so fast!

Later tests determined that sharks are attracted by frequencies ranging between approximately 10 and 800 Hz while we are using 30Mhz which equals 30000000 Hz. Plus you can also use a Shark Band bracelet for extra safety.

Boost Fin meets the IPX8 waterproof standard (up to 10m / 32’9″).

Each part and component exposed to saltwater are salt fog endurance resistant and certified for saltwater operation. All plugs, connectors, and other electrical contacted surfaces are covered with rubber plugs to prevent them from water.

Seawater can enter the charger port without any damage – there’s a diode that essentially acts as a one-way switch for current. It allows current to flow easily in one direction, but severely restricts current from flowing in the opposite direction

Charging

You charge it just like any of your electronic devices, using a wired charger. We provide a custom 100-240V wall charger and it takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery. Plus you don’t even need to take the Boost Fin off the board. Please note that we don’t recommend charging the batteries with any charger other than the one that comes with your device.

P.S. In case something truly damages the propeller, you’ll be able to resolve this issue through our service center.

We spent a lot of time trying to find a perfect balance between shape, power, and battery life. The components are compact enough to where we were able to house them into a streamline casing that allows for minimum drag while paddling or riding.

Feathering prop helps to minimize the drag while riding a wave. It has a maximized propeller pitch and a blade surface nearly parallel to the water flow to minimize resistance when it is not in operation.
